Is Higher GSM Better? How to Compare Fabric Weight When You Shop Online
GSM tells you how heavy a fabric is, not how it feels. Why two pieces with the same number can be nothing alike, and how to compare garments before you buy.

"Heavyweight" is printed on a lot of hoodies. Some brands back it with a gsm figure, which helps. But a number on its own can still mislead you, because two garments with the same gsm can be nothing alike.
If you want the definition, the oz-to-gsm conversion and the weight of every piece we make, start with our Fabric Weight Index or the oz to gsm converter. This guide picks up where they stop: what the number leaves out, and how to compare two pieces when you can't touch them.
The short answer
Higher gsm is not automatically better. It means more fabric mass in the same area, so the fabric is heavier and usually denser. That suits a structured hoodie or a cooler-weather layer. It does not suit a training top in an Australian summer. And gsm is not a quality score: textile guides are explicit that weight alone does not measure quality, warmth or durability (Runtang Textile, accessed 1 Oct 2026).
Same gsm, different garment
Here are two real examples from our own range.
Unity Classic Oversized Tee: 6.5 oz (about 220 gsm), 100% combed cotton, pre-shrunk.
Contour Tank: 220 gsm (6.5 oz), 78% polyamide, 22% elastane.
The weight per square metre is identical. One is a structured cotton tee that holds an oversized shape. The other is a close-fitting stretch top. If you compared them by gsm alone, you'd think they were interchangeable. They aren't.

Five things the number leaves out
1. Fibre. Cotton, polyester, polyamide and elastane behave differently at the same weight. Stretch knits used for leggings, bras and tanks are usually nylon or polyester with elastane, and their weight says more about coverage and compression feel than warmth.
2. Construction. French terry keeps looped yarns on the inside. Fleece is brushed so the inside is soft and lofty. At a similar weight, fleece tends to feel heavier and terry lighter (Runtang Textile, accessed 1 Oct 2026). Our Unity Crop Hood is 10.3 oz 100% cotton French terry; the Fleeced Full-Zip Boxy Hoodie is 350 gsm and fleece-lined. They sit within a few grams of each other and still wear differently.
3. Finish. Mineral-washed, vintage-washed and snow-washed fabrics are softened and broken in. The weight stays roughly the same; the stiffness doesn't. The Oversized Pump Tee (275 gsm cotton, mineral wash) and the Snow Washed Sleeveless Hoodie (320 gsm cotton) are both washed for a softer hand.
4. Cut. A 420 gsm hoodie cut boxy with dropped shoulders drapes. The same fabric cut slim would feel rigid. Weight sets the potential; the pattern decides what you feel.
5. How it's measured. Fabric weight is measured under published test methods such as ASTM D3776/D3776M, which sets out how to cut and weigh samples to get mass per unit area. Brands don't always say whether a figure is the fabric before or after washing, so treat small differences (a few grams either way) as noise.
How to compare two pieces online, in order
- Gsm (or oz). Convert to the same unit first. Our converter does it in one step.
- Fibre. Is it cotton, a cotton blend, or a stretch synthetic? That decides how it moves and how it handles heat.
- Construction. Jersey, French terry, fleece or a stretch knit. For hoodies, terry versus fleece is the biggest single difference at the same weight.
- Finish. Washed fabrics will feel softer out of the bag than an unwashed piece of the same weight.
- Flat measurements. Check the chest and length on the size guide, not just the size letter. A heavy fabric in the wrong cut is still the wrong piece.
Only then compare price.
Matching weight to the job
- Training in heat: stay light, and choose stretch knits for close-fitting pieces. For exercise in hot conditions, Sports Medicine Australia advises lightweight, breathable clothing and lists clothing among the factors that affect heat risk.
- Warm-up and pump-cover layers: mid-weight cotton gives an oversized tee or sleeveless hoodie some body without making it a winter piece. More in What Is a Pump Cover?
- Layers for after training: heavier fabric holds a shape, which is what makes a hoodie look considered off the gym floor. Our gym-to-street guide shows how the weight bands fit together.

Frequently asked questions
Is higher GSM better?
Not automatically. Higher GSM means a heavier, denser fabric, which suits structured hoodies and cooler-weather layers. Lighter fabric suits training and hot weather. Fibre, construction, finish and cut matter as much as the number.
Why do two garments with the same GSM feel different?
Because GSM only measures weight per square metre. A 220 gsm combed-cotton tee and a 220 gsm polyamide-elastane tank weigh the same per square metre but are different fabrics, knitted differently, for different jobs.
Does French terry or fleece feel heavier at the same GSM?
Fleece is brushed on the inside, so at a similar weight it tends to feel heavier. French terry keeps its loops unbrushed and tends to feel lighter.
What GSM is a heavyweight hoodie?
There is no formal threshold. Industry guides generally place hoodie and sweatshirt fabrics between about 280 and 450 gsm, and brands usually reserve the word heavyweight for the upper part of that range.
How should I compare two hoodies online?
Compare the GSM first, then the fibre, then the construction (fleece or French terry), then the finish, then the flat measurements on the size chart. Compare price last.
